EDF unveils £5,000 sustainability grant scheme

EDF’s new sustainability grant programme offers small UK businesses a chance to receive a £5,000 cash award or a workplace electric‑vehicle charger, backed by Enterprise Nation, NatWest and Square.

How the grant and charger awards work

Five businesses will be selected for a £5,000 grant that can be used for energy‑efficient upgrades such as enhanced insulation for walls, lofts or floors. Another five winners will receive a workplace EV charger, including standard installation, from the provider Pod. Applicants may apply for the cash grant, the charger, or both.

Eligibility is limited to UK‑based firms with fewer than 50 employees that have been trading for at least a year. Applicants must own or rent a business premises and hold a Companies House registration number or, if operating as a sole trader, provide proof of a UTR. The programme excludes firms undergoing insolvency, examinership, receivership or similar processes.

Individuals applying must be business owners, or have the owner’s approval, and cannot be employees of EDF, Enterprise Nation, NatWest or Square, nor have immediate family members or household members employed by those organisations.

Extra requirements for the EV charger

Businesses that opt for the charger must meet additional criteria. They need dedicated off‑street parking for employees or visitors; a residential address does not qualify. If the premises are rented, permission from the landlord is required. Applicants also have to demonstrate “electrical readiness,” which includes a subscription to a site management service costing £9 per charger per month to access management controls.

The cash grant is taxable, and recipients are responsible for any related tax liability.

Eligibility is strict.

To apply, businesses must create an Enterprise Nation account and complete an eligibility form. Once eligibility is confirmed, the full application can be submitted. All entries will be reviewed by a panel of judges, and successful applicants will be contacted by Enterprise Nation.

“Small businesses have the ambition to become more sustainable, but access to funding can often hold them back. By partnering with EDF Small Business, we’re giving entrepreneurs the opportunity to invest in changes that are good for their business and good for the environment,” said Aaron Asadi, CEO of Enterprise Nation.

The competition opens on 21 July 2026 and closes at midnight on 31 August 2026. Applicants must outline how the grant or charger would improve their sustainability and be prepared to share their story if requested.

For many small firms, the grant could mean the difference between a modest insulation upgrade and a full retrofit that lowers energy bills and reduces carbon emissions. The charger option may also help businesses attract employees who drive electric vehicles, offering a tangible perk while supporting broader decarbonisation goals.

In practice, the programme could push owners to audit their current energy use, identify quick wins, and plan longer‑term investments. Those who secure the grant will need to allocate funds wisely, balancing immediate upgrades with the tax implications of a taxable award.

Applicants should also be aware of upcoming UK Sustainability Reporting Standards slated for 2026, which will require SMEs to disclose environmental performance. Securing the grant now may help firms meet future reporting obligations more easily, and they may wish to compare green energy suppliers before finalising their plans.

Further details, including the full list of eligibility criteria and the application portal, are available through Enterprise Nation’s website. Businesses interested in the programme are encouraged to review the requirements carefully and submit their proposals before the deadline.
