Putin wants greater global South influence in UN Security Council - global south influence
Russian President Vladimir Putin addresses the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi to advocate for reforms in the UN Security Council.

Russian President Vladimir Poutine used the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi to push for a more significant role for the global South within the United Nations Security Council. Poutine argued that increased representation from Latin America, Africa, and Asia would improve the global efficacy of the United Nations. He maintained that Russia remains committed to preserving the organization’s central role in international diplomacy, according to the report.

The leader emphasized the need for urgent modernization of major financial and commercial bodies, specifically the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund. Poutine noted these institutions have failed to adapt to modern economic and political shifts. He acknowledged their continued value as platforms for communication among top global economies. To that end, he urged BRICS nations to strengthen their cooperation within these structures.

Regarding the BRICS alliance, Poutine highlighted the collective technological and intellectual power of its members. He described the group as a fundamental pillar of global leadership, stating that international stability, humanitarian efforts, and economic partnerships are increasingly shaped by common decisions made by these countries. In his vision of a multipolar world system, he encouraged BRICS to promote multilateralism and integrate a broader range of nations into global governance mechanisms.

Resistance from established powers remains a significant obstacle to these ambitions. Western nations have historically dominated the architecture of global financial institutions, creating a structure that critics argue serves only a small portion of the world population. The BRICS bloc, therefore, serves as a counterweight to this traditional dominance. By advocating for reform, Poutine seeks to dismantle the existing hierarchy that favors the Global North.

Global financial institutions need updates. Poutine highlighted that the World Trade Organization, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund must undergo urgent modernization to address the complexities of the current era. He argued that these bodies have failed to adapt adequately to modern economic and political shifts, leaving them ill-equipped to handle contemporary challenges.

The push for reform comes as the geopolitical environment shifts rapidly. Emerging economies are demanding a seat at the table to reflect their growing economic contributions. Traditional powers are hesitant to relinquish control over key mechanisms of global finance. This tension defines the current era of international relations.

The 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi served as a key platform for these discussions. Delegates from the member nations gathered to outline their shared vision for a more equitable international order. Poutine’s speech at the event provided a clear roadmap for future negotiations.
